Morpheus Retail Macau

Morpheus Retail is based at the base of Zaha Hadid’s Morpheus Hotel in the City of Dreams, Macau. The brief called for a 415 m2 of retail space housing luxury brands with aesthetics ranging from Rick Owens to Dries Van Noten.

Conscious of the unique Morpheus brand PMDL had to consider the design of the space as part of the overall experience of the complex. In the context of an architectural landmark how does one retain that brand experience and extend it into Morpheus’ retail offering?

PMDL approached the design as one would a gallery space. Brands of a similar aesthetic were placed adjacent to each other to create neighbourhoods of similar brands and designs. The architecture was kept simple – the flooring geometry with a subtle tonal change was extended into the retail space, gallery style adjustable lighting was installed and the walls were kept simple and white.

Spatial inserts defining larger ‘superbrand’ spaces were placed against back walls. The vertical element of these inserts are adaptable and can be removed or replaced easily. Unique fixtures are then placed to further enhance the spatial quality of these inserts.

Design features for smaller brands were placed through out. These features are a reaction to the aesthetic of the neighbourhood i.e. an elegant octagonal arched temple was placed with similarly elegant and refined brands whereas chaotic neon lighting is in a neighbourhood with its relevant brands.

Every piece in the store is a unique design, and this coupled with the simple architectural design reinforces the gallery feel. This gallery aesthetic, luxury brands, and uniquely designed pieces all within the context of the architectural landmark that is Morpheus give the customer a memorable experience.
