Mr B’s and Tao Lounge Sydney

Bold architectural interventions and eclectic layering help to recreate a former Sydney institution.

PMDL were commissioned to take on the renovation and adaptive reuse of an historic building in Sydney’s CBD. The bar space is set over 3 levels, with 7 open commercial floors above.

As part of the brief, we created a new bar concept on the ground and mezzanine floors with a nightclub in the lower basement floor. The works also included facade restoration and upgrade.

We layered remnants of former building elements and historical references as tributes to the variety of the building’s past uses. Chinese styled day beds on the mezzanine level offer a gestural reference to the past occupation of the space by the Mandarin Club using the metal grills formerly on the facade.  Elements such as marquetry paneling on the celling and walls were informed by a small fragment of linoleum with a similar pattern found within the space emphasising a truly contextual experience.
